Beans like to climb. If you give them alot to climb on and keep them off the ground they will grow to astonishing heights. The main thing to do when planting anything you want to propogate and grow well is the "preparation". If you are starting a new garden, then pick your spot and strip a couple inches of grass and roots off of the area. Put a border around the area that is below the grade by at least 2" - 6 " ( the deeper the better to keep out the unwanted grass and weeds) Next till the soil with a roto-tiller preferably or by hand if you wish. Either way you want to pulverize the earth into a fine smooth mixture. depending on what you are working with and what you are planting, you may want to add something to the soil to give it a boost for your plants/seeds. ie. compost, top soil, sand (if too clayish) whatever it takes to make a dark rich soil. (except for tuber plants which like more sandier soils) Anyway once you pulverize and aerate the soil it sould be alot higher than the surrounding grade. next pull the soil in to the middle from the edging creating a ditch around your garden for run off. Now level the rest of the area being careful not to fill in your ditch. Note: step on the area as little as possible so you wont compact the soil again. Now that you have it all leveled out you can make rows about 12 - 18" wide with a walking ditch beside each row. So essentially what youi'll have is from left to right the outer ditch a row with a peak going down into another walking ditch and then a row peak and so on until you reach the other side. Now you are ready to plant. Follow directions on plants/seeds for spacing. Also you should plant taller plants behind shorter growing ones. Behind meaning that the shorter growing plants get sunlight and not shade from tall plants. Also climbers i.e. beans should be at one end or side depending on sun orientation. The ditches will provide ample area for watering your plants. Water your plants themselves before or after they get their sun not during. you can water in the ditches anytime as long as you don't wet the plants themselves. Hope this helps you. I've been gardening for many years and in every type of climate. Good luck and many stressless days ... gardening one of the last stress relievers that you can enjoy all through the winter months .... my freezer is always full of something from the garden.

Sunlight, the right amount of water-not too much- not too little, maybe a little fertilizer, good soil, the right temperature. Also you want to remove weeds and other plants that would suck up nutrients and deprive your bean plant of them or would choke it.
