Orchids are a specialised kind of flower. Like other "monocots" they have their floral parts in 3s -- 3 sepals and 3 petals. The median (centre) petal is modified in various ways and is called a 'labellum'. Sometimes the labellum takes extreme forms, as in the slipper orchids. The male and female parts are joined into a single structure called the 'column', which is the centre of the flower. On the column, the pollen (which is not loose but forms firm masses called pollinia) and the stigma are kept separate to avoid self-fertilization. The sticky pollinia are placed so that they are easily detached onto the backs of insects which then pollinate the next flower they visit.

Orchids aren't the only group of plants with highly modified flowers but they are the best known. Another group that can have fancy modifications is the Ginger and Costus families.

Orchids are kinds of flowers but NOT a "particular secies" as the first answer indicated. They are an entire family of plants.

Edit: Don't listen to mentag, below. He is having a tough time with English (Orchard).
